Orton is a small, largely rural, Cumbrian parish situated 3 miles West of Carlisle, between the Solway Firth and the Lake District fells. The parish has significant areas of open farm land with areas of habitation in four small villages, Great Orton, Little Orton, Baldwinholme and Orton Rigg.
Great Orton is the largest village: it has an 11th century church, a primary school, a public house and a public hall, all providing facilities for the surrounding area. There is also a children’s play area, a football pitch and a site of special scientific interest at nearby Orton Moss.
Orton Parish Council is a locally elected body of 8 councillors who meet six times a year. All of the meetings are advertised and anyone who wishes to attend is most welcome.
